Jimmy Kimmel has been staging “Mash-Up Mondays” for the better part of a year on his late night talk show and sometimes the odd, typically pun-based pairings work beautifully, while others are a bit more clunky. On Monday night (Nov. 9), Jimmy Kimmel Live welcomed the “Joss Stone Temple Pilots” to the stage for what should prove to be one of the better pairings.
Stone Temple Pilots, who recently amicably split with frontman Chester Bennington, performed their hit single “Interstate Love Song” with soulful pop star Joss Stone on vocals. But while Stone typically found her success in the pop world, she definitely had the vocal chops to hang with the STP guys on their rock hit, bringing a Janis Joplin-like sass and attitude to the performance. And that’s not the only thing she brought, as the trio of Robert and Dean DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz were joined by a horn section and keyboard player. Check out the performance in full above.
As stated, Stone Temple Pilots are currently in the midst of replacing their frontman. In their statement revealing the lineup change, the band revealed, “There is an abundance of new music written, some of which is already recorded. We have had the fortune of playing with some very talented singers over the last few months and will continue to do so until each of us feels and knows when the right person arrives.”
After hearing Stone perform with the band, is it possible they might record a disc with a variety of vocalists similar to Slash’s first solo venture before continuing with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators? Or will we wait until there is a more long term solution before hearing the next Stone Temple Pilots release? Stay tuned to see how it all plays out.
