Fleshgod Apocalypse have been confidently heaping praise unto themselves as the metal world collectively waits for their next slab of orchestral death metal fury, King. They’ve kept fans satiated with the hard-hitting single “The Fool” and the stomping “Gravity” and have served up the next cut, “Cold as Perfection” complete with an engaging, theatrical video to accompany the song’s dark theme.
“Cold as Perfection” opens with a thud, immediately playing into their carefully balanced symphonic side with a sloth-paced tempo as clips overlook a luxurious estate fit for, well… a king! The band commented on the album as a whole and the video, stating, “King should be considered an entire unique opera, even though every single song, with its related character, treats a specific and intense aspect of human condition or behavior. We picked ‘Cold as Perfection’ for the first video because it faces one of the heaviest and most painful aspects of existence.”
As the video goes on, the king’s wife becomes noticeably displeased in her appearance as she begins to shows signs of growing old. “The song is about aging and the sad consciousness of losing physical and mental integrity with the passing of time,” said Fleshgod Apocalypse. They continued, “While we waste our life in the continuous research of perfection, which we know will never be reached, we deliberately sacrifice the splendor of our existence that is composed by an infinite number of imperfect details. We lose ourselves, we lose the time that nature offered us for free and we offend those not lucky enough to have as much as we have.”
Noting a theme everyone can relate to, they concluded, “It’s scary because it’s not an invented story, it’s reality and it’s inexorable. For sure the theme is brutal and extreme, that’s why it deserved an equally extreme video.” The quality is top notch as each character is dressed like royalty as are the rooms of the lavish estate first seen when the video begins.
Fleshgod Apocalypse are known for playing at blistering speeds with purely concussive drumming and “Cold as Perfection” sees the Italian outfit slow things down to a crawl and incorporates spoken word moments that give deeper insight into the overall plot of the video. The story is tragic, but a fitting angle for one of the most relentless bands in death metal.
King will be out Feb. 5 on Nuclear Blast. Pre-orders can be placed here. Look for Fleshgod Apocalypse on tour with Carach Angren and Abigail Williams and a full list of dates can be found at our 2016 Guide to Rock + Metal Tours.
