Disturbed’s David Draiman on Weed-Inspired ‘Light it Up’ + Simon & Garfunkel ‘Sound of Silence’ Cover

We spoke with Disturbed vocalist David Draiman about a ton of topics during his recent visit to our studio, and here’s the latest piece of our exclusive chat with the man.

Disturbed made history once again as Immortalized became the band’s fifth consecutive album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart. This is thanks in part to the track “Fire it Up,” Draiman’s ode to the sweet leaf, and Disturbed’s take on the Simon & Garfunkel classic “The Sound of Silence.”

“After 90, 100 songs that you’ve written in your career, you kind of start struggling to write about subject matter that you haven’t already written about,” says Draiman. “Out of left field, Danny [Donegan, guitar] made the suggestion, ‘You know what, dude? Why not write about what has helped you open up all these years? Why not write about a little inspiration from the beautiful, beautiful, green sticky icky goodness that ends up opening up the pathways to your mind?” Draiman goes on to give his opinion of marijuana legalization in the U.S.

Speaking of Disturbed’s “Sound of Silence” cover, the band chose to forgo taking their usual musical route and getting softer with the track. “I thank you guys for pushing me in this direction,” Draiman told his bandmates have recording the song. “I wouldn’t have normally gone there. Personally, I hadn’t heard my voice like that since I was a young man, since I was a teenager.”

Check out David Draiman talking about the tracks in the video above! Disturbed will support Immortalized with a North American tour in 2016. See the dates here.
