Stone Sour released their second covers EP of 2015, Straight Outta Burbank, on Record Store Day in November. The second of three Burbank EPs, this one highlights more songs that had a major impact an influence on the band, which was formed back in 1992. Cuts include songs from Motley Crue (above), Slayer (below), Iron Maiden, Bad Brains and the Rolling Stones, making for quite an eclectic mix.

“Too Fast For Love” sees Corey Taylor reach into his upper register, doing his best to imitate a 20-year-old Vince Neil. Taylor pulls off the sharp trills of the bleach blonde singer’s efforts back from 1981 and nails it, demonstrating his understated vocal range. The rest of the song has a modern spin on the Crue classic, though just about anything sounds polished in comparison to the raw, self-produced original.

Choosing another title track, Stone Sour also covered Slayer’s Seasons in the Abyss.” The closing track off the 1990 album reiterates the hook-laden nature that Slayer had progressed to after mastering their blistering thrash attack four years earlier on the landmark Reign in Blood. Beginning with those familiar, dissonant chords, the song sets the mood for nearly two and a half minutes before the verse settles in. Taylor’s voice here is well suited for Tom Araya‘s decidedly more relaxed delivery and drummer Roy Mayorga pulls off Dave Lombardo‘s parts with aplomb.

Stone Sour’s last studio effort was House of Gold and Bones – Part 2, which was released in 2013 and ascended to No. 10 on the Billboard 200 charts. The third EP in the Burbank trilogy will be No Sleep ‘Till Burbank and is slated for 2016.
