Scott Weiland’s former bandmates in VELVET REVOLVER — guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan, drummer Matt Sorum and guitarist Dave Kushner — have released the following statement regarding the singer’s death:
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of our old friend and bandmate, Scott Weiland. We experienced a good chunk of life with Scott, and even in his darkest times, we all had hope and love for him. His artistry will live on, of that there is no doubt.
“Deepest condolences and sadness are for his children, Noah and Lucy.
“We all travelled around this world together on tour; our band, wives, and kids… and we grew to a big family that still remains to this day. It’s just so sad and brutal from any perspective.
“Rest in peace, Scott.”
Weiland joined VELVET REVOLVER, which featured ex-GUNS N’ ROSES members Slash, McKagan and Sorum plus guitarist Dave Kushner, after he left STONE TEMPLE PILOTS. They recorded two albums — 2004’s “Contraband” and 2007’s “Libertad” — before the band kicked him out for his drug addiction issues.
All the members of VELVET REVOLVER insist that the band is not dead, and the four instrumental players have periodically held quiet auditions for a new frontman.
VELVET REVOLVER reunited with Weiland for a four-song set in January 2012 at a Los Angeles tribute concert for late songwriter John O’Brien, but the band has otherwise remained inactive.
At one point it was reported that VELVET REVOLVER was going to team with STONE SOUR and SLIPKNOT vocalist Corey Taylor, but the idea was ultimately vetoed by Slash. The group and Taylor recorded demos of 10 songs together.
