If you’ve lived in the Los Angeles area for any length of time and frequented the popular Sunset Strip eatery, the Rainbow Bar and Grill, odds are pretty good you’ve got a “Lemmy sighting” story. The Motorhead leader was a regular at the Rainbow, often sidled up to one of the video games enjoying the action. It’s fitting that the Rainbow Bar and Grill will open its doors this coming Saturday (Jan. 9) for a public memorial to honor the late Motorhead leader.
The Rainbow made the announcement via a photo posting on their Facebook page, with a message stating, “Join us as we say goodbye to a dear friend and loved one.” The photo shows Lemmy playing one of his favorite games at the Rainbow, reveals that the memorial will take place between 2PM-2AM, and concludes, “Come celebrate the life of Lemmy Kilmister. Legends never die.”
It’s been widely reported that upon learning the news of Lemmy’s cancer diagnosis, Rainbow owner Mike Maglieri arranged for the frontman’s favorite game to be installed at his home during his final hours. The establishment stated upon Lemmy’s death, “It’s hard to believe that we will never again see your smiling face at the end of the bar. You’ve been a wonderful friend to us all. You will forever live on in our hearts. And hold court at the Rainbow Bar and Grill. RIP Lemmy Kilmister.”
In related news, an online petition has been started with the desire to erect a Lemmy Kilmister statue at the Rainbow. The petition is seeking 5,000 signees. The statement says, “People around the world would like to have a statue to pay respects for this rock n roll legend. He frequented this well known restaurant and would serve as a memorial. We the undersigned are concerned citizens who urge our leaders to act now.” If you wish to sign, you may do so here.
