Parkway Drive Kick Into High Gear in NYC With Miss May I + Thy Art Is Murder

It had been a while since Parkway Drive played New York City, and their show at Irving Plaza was sold out for months. It was surely a night to remember when the Australian rockers made their way to the Big Apple on Saturday (Nov. 14) during their headlining tour in support of their new album Ire.

The show started with a one-two punch of new tracks “Destroyer” and “Dying to Believe” off of the new release, not to mention a burst of confetti. Guitarist Jeff Ling rocked out in a wheelchair onstage due to a torn hamstring but that didn’t stop him from hobbling about in a circle onstage when it was time for a circle pit. Circle pits definitely broke out throughout the night, especially during hard-hitting favorites “Deliver Me,” “Dark Days,” “Wild Eyes” and “Swing.”

The music of Parkway Drive is powerful and that power is amplified live, as the band as a whole is unrelenting and their fans are as passionate as they come. It was hot inside the venue, and fans were sore and sweaty. But as vocalist Winston McCall said, “If you don’t smell worse than when you came in, then you’re not having fun.” It got even more heated when the encore hit as Parkway Drive ended their set with their new track “Crushed” and an older favorite, “Home is for the Heartless.”

Miss May I was the only non-Aussie band on the bill and got the crowd pumped as they took the stage beforehand. The Ohio metallers are out in support of their new album Deathless, and frontman Levi Benton was in full swing with high kicks and some serious headbanging as Miss May I fans were right there along with him.

Thy Art Is Murder, hailing from Sydney, Australia, ripped through their set, and frontman CJ McMahon wasted no time as he climbed up towards the balcony and leaped off into the crowd during the third song. The hilariously angry McMahon joked with fans as he made it clear that they would yell and sing “Holy War!” to end the set if they didn’t want “a size 12 Nike in the face.” Whether you get kicked in the face or not, whenever Thy Art Is Murder comes to town go see them!

Fellow Aussies In Hearts Wake kicked off the night with a highly energetic set and continue to carry the torch for other younger bands emerging from the killer heavy music scene coming from Australia. Check out our gallery above of all of the bands who took over Irving Plaza in New York City!
