We recently had a chance to sit down and speak with Megadeth‘s Dave Mustaine about the band’s upcoming Dystopia album, but during the discussion the subject matter turned to Stone Temple Pilots and we took the opportunity to ask Mustaine about his past association with STP and his thoughts on Scott Weiland‘s death.

For Megadeth historians, you may remember that Stone Temple Pilots opened for the band on their Countdown to Extinction tour back in 1992. Mustaine tells us he was first turned onto the band when he was asked by a magazine to review the upstart rockers’ Core album. He recalls that he wasn’t convinced they were the real deal at first, but adds, “The more I listened to it, the more I really grew to respect [Scott Weiland’s] vocals and I thought that Robert [DeLeo], his playing was really great too.”

In the video above, Mustaine recalls some of those early shows and some of the ways in which he offered advice that eventually helped the band as they started to progress toward stardom.

As for Weiland, Mustaine says he gave the singer some personal advice, “At the end of the tour, I said, ‘Look Scott, you’re gonna be huge, you’re gonna have money, you’re gonna have drugs, you’re gonna have p–sy and it’s gonna be everywhere.’ And I said, ‘If you do anything, stay away from heroin.’”

Watch Mustaine’s full recollections of his time spent with Stone Temple Pilots and his thoughts on the death of Scott Weiland in the video above.

And stay tuned for more of our interview with Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine about the band’s upcoming Dystopia album.
