DEF LEPPARD guitarist Vivian Campbell has told Billboard.com that he is confident that the band’s fans won’t have to wait another seven years before the release of a new studio album. “I do think [the success of last year’s self-titled effort] encouraged us a lot to the extent I think we’ll see another record a hell of a lot sooner than the time between this one and the last one,” he said. “There’s always stuff around. There’s always ideas. Everyone in the band is reasonably prolific. With LEPPARD, it’s never the question of not having enough songs; it’s a question of what kind of songs. Every DEF LEPPARD album has to have all these different flavors and hit all these different marks. It’s not a question of just showing up with a dozen rock songs. So that’s what takes a lot of time.”
“Def Leppard” entered The Billboard 200 chart at position No. 10 with first-week sales of just over 30,000 units — nearly all from pure album sales.
The album is the band’s first studio effort since “Songs From the Sparkle Lounge” in 2008.
DEF LEPPARD was forced to postpone the last ten dates of its tour with STYX and TESLA due to LEPPARD frontman Joe Elliott suffering from vocal issues.
Campbell — who before joining DEF LEPPARD in 1992 was well known for his work with DIO and WHITESNAKE — went public with his Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis in 2013.
While he was undergoing stem-cell treatment, he was unable to join his bandmates as they completed work on their new studio album. The guitarist was also forced to miss a few of the band’s live appearances, including the pre-game show at an NFL International Series game.
