Metal Wani’s Anne Catherine Swallow recently conducted an interview with MINISTRY and SURGICAL METH MACHINE mainman Al Jourgensen. You can now listen to the chat in two parts below.
Speaking about the popularity of controversial Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, Jourgensen said: “Donald Trump is not the main problem. He’s a result of society’s problems here. And what’s more scary than Donald Trump is the fact that three out of ten Americans think that he would be a good idea to unleash on the world. The scary part is the American culture and these American people, not Donald Trump. Donald Trump is just like… He’s society’s robot. This is what we want, or three out of ten people want that.”
He continued: “I know Europe’s very scared about the possibility… well, the whole world is scared about the possibility of a Trump presidency. But you have to remember, there’s seven out of ten people here that are still sane. You guys are grappling with that in Germany right now and all over Europe with the fear of the migrant crisis and of the Islamic faith. I mean, there’s that fear there. Trump plays upon that fear here, and three out of ten people fall for it. And if you look at the rise of the National Front in Germany, and the right wing in France is just going absolutely crazy… I mean, they might actually gain seats in their parliament; I mean, big-time seats. Same here. Like I said a few albums ago, fear is big business.”
Asked if he is still optimistic about this planet’s future, Al said: “I can’t help but be optimistic, because I have a very strong faith-based thing where I know I’m going other places. And I know the other places, and some of them are far more interesting; some of them are worse. This one’s pretty bad, though. I think this planet’s pretty fucked up in its thinking, in the way that society thinks, or the way that society’s becoming.”
SURGICAL METH MACHINE will release its self-titled debut album on April 15 via Nuclear Blast. The CD was recorded primarily at Jourgensen’s home studio in Burbank, California with his longtime engineer Sam D’Ambruoso.
