Stone Sour + Lzzy Hale Rock Rolling Stones’ ‘Gimme Shelter’ Cover

Lzzy Hale, you’ve got some big shoes to fill, but if there’s any female voice in rock who can come close to matching the intensity and power of Merry Clayton’s iconic backing vocals on the Rolling Stones‘ “Gimme Shelter,” it’s the Halestorm frontwoman.

The vocalist tests out her pipes backing up Corey Taylor and his Stone Sour bandmates on their cover of the Stones classic, which will be released as part of the band’s Straight Outta Burbank covers EP for Record Store Day’s Black Friday event (Nov. 27).

As you can hear in the player above, Stone Sour stay pretty true to the original source material, complete with bluesy guitar licks and backing harmonica. While Corey Taylor’s voice will never be mistaken for Mick Jagger, it lends its own unique stamp on the song and Taylor embodies the attitude of the track. Meanwhile, Hale mirrors Clayton closer than you might think and the pairing is an energetic one and a game effort that will likely go down as one of the better renditions of the oft-covered track.

“To stay true to the original recordings of these songs, we tried to recreate the sounds and tones that the original artist used,” Stone Sour guitarist Josh Rand said in a statement to Rolling Stone. “This was both fun and challenging, but the end result was worth all the hard work everyone put into achieving it.”

The upcoming set, the follow-up to the band’s Meanwhile in Burbank covers EP released earlier this year, also features renditions of Bad Brains‘ “Sailin’ On,” Iron Maiden‘s “Running Free,” Motley Crue‘s “Too Fast for Love” and Slayer‘s “Seasons in the Abyss.”

Corey Taylor offered in his own statement, “I love Straight Outta Burbank, because it’s a little bit further out there than Meanwhile in Burbank … This one hits a few different corners: [it’s] got Bad Brains on one end and the Stones on the other … and the crazy thing is it all works. I think that’s a reflection of us as a band. We do what we want, style-wise and it works. I hope people enjoy the spirit, music and fun that went into this.”

The Straight Outta Burbank EP will be available on colored vinyl for participating Record Store Day stores. So be sure to get out on Black Friday and pick up your copy.
