Sammy Hagar on Van Halen Reunion Talk: ‘We’ll See What Happens When It Happens If It Happens’

They were the tweets heard round the Van Halen world. Though it seemed innocent enough — Sammy Hagar wishing Eddie Van Halen a happy birthday and the guitarist responding back — the fact that the onetime warring bandmates were being civil to each other publicly got many fans wondering if it was not only a cooling of tensions, but also a possible first step toward a reunion.

During a recent chat with the Daily Bulletin about his new AXS series, Rock and Roll Road Trip With Sammy Hagar, the inevitable “reunion” question came up and Hagar handled it diplomatically. The vocalist explained, “My favorite thing to say without biting my own tongue is no comment. Every time I turned around, it was a no-win situation.”

He went on to add, “If I say what I feel … I would always get 50 percent of the Van Halen fans saying, ‘Right on, you rule.’ Then the haters would dog me like, ‘You’re always dogging Van Halen.’ I’m going to shut up. They get their wish. We’ll see what happens when it happens — if it happens.” The use of “when” before “if” may have some fans of the pairing trying to read something into the comment, but as Hagar said, “We’ll see what happens.”

Van Halen most recently reunited with their other vocalist, David Lee Roth, who sang on the band’s 2012 studio album, A Different Kind of Truth. The disc marked the band’s first studio album since 1998 and their first with Roth since the 1984 album. The band has toured in support of the disc and most recently hit the road last year with Roth.

As for Hagar, he’s hardly waiting around to “see what happens.” The rocker has been fronting his new band The Circle, which also features original Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, and still has his Cabo Wabo tequila line and associated ventures. Meanwhile, the Rock and Roll Road Trip With Sammy Hagar is airing on Sunday nights on AXS-TV.
