Former Morbid Angel Frontman David Vincent Performs Original Country Song

We finally have the answer to why former Morbid Angel frontman David Vincent has been wearing a cowboy hat over the last few years! Performing at the White Horse Saloon in Austin, Texas on Jan. 9, Vincent adopted a low, country croon as his band performed the original cut, “Buyer Beware.” He’s not the first metal musician to delve into country, but the word seems to make metalheads collectively cringe.

Alongside Vincent is guitarist Danny B., who played in the Lemmy Kilmister fronted rockabilly group, the Head Cat. The four-piece outfit play a traditional country style, which wouldn’t be complete without the southern guitar twang and bluesy licks. The song itself is rather catchy and Vincent’s voice is well-suited for the style, however taboo that might be.

In mid-2015, Morbid Angel mainman Trey Azagthoth dissolved the lineup, which included David Vincent, Tim Yeung and Destructhor. The split with Vincent, who famously fronted the band during their peak from 1986 – 1996 and again in 2004 until 2015, was due to “incompatibilities with regards to [Azagthoth and I] working together.” Steve Tucker fronted Morbid Angel from 1997 – 2001 and again in 2003 – 2004 and has been the only one confirmed to be part of the new lineup.

The last Morbid Angel record to feature Vincent was the ill-fated Illud Divinum Insanus, which was lambasted by fans for its fusion of death metal and stompy electronic music that aligned itself more with Vincent’s previous project, the Genitorturers.

There is no word yet if this project will be Vincent’s full-time focus, but he has now joined an increasing cast of metal musicians like Al Jourgensen of Ministry and Korn‘s Jonathan Davis who have ventured into country territory. Jourgensen’s group, Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters still retains a bit of a metallic aspect. Davis will be featured on a country tribute record to the Bakersfield sound, collaborating with major country act Big and Rich.
