Former MEGADETH drummers Nick Menza and Shawn Drover joined forces for a quick “side-by-side” jam on January 24 at the Soultone booth at this year’s NAMM show in Anaheim, California. Check out video footage below.
In a recent interview with USA Today, MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine spoke about what transpired to cause Drover and guitarist Chris Broderick to abruptly announce their exits within hours of each other in November 2014. “I was surprised but not surprised,” Mustaine said. It didn’t help that MEGADETH fans kept asking the band to re-team with“Rust In Peace”-era guitarist Marty Friedman and Menza. Although that reunion never panned out, “everybody was talking about it and they quit,” Mustaine said. “I would have, too.”
As for whether there are any hard feelings, Mustaine said: “I got to this point in my life where I realized that you don’t have to put somebody down to make somebody else look great. I’ve got nothing bad to say about Shawn and Chris. I miss the friendship. I wish we had gotten the chance to say goodbye.”
MEGADETH’s current lineup includes Brazilian guitarist Kiko Loureiro, best known for his work with ANGRA, and LAMB OF GOD drummer Chris Adler.
Menza claimed in a recent interview that the attempted reunion of the “Rust In Peace” lineup failed to materialize because Mustaine “didn’t wanna show me any love at all.”
The drummer said that he was approached by Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson to replace Drover at the end of 2014, and that he had started working out new tracks with the band. But the plan collapsed after he was offered a contract he described as “very unfair.”
Menza joined MEGADETH for the 1989 recording “Rust In Peace” and for the next nine years became associated with the band’s “classic” and most profitable era.
