If you’ve heard Disturbed‘s cover of Simon and Garfunkel‘s “Sound of Silence” or seen the captivating video the band shot for the track, you know the song is truly a showcase for the powerful pipes of frontman David Draiman. On Wednesday (Feb. 10) in Fargo, N.D., the Fargo Civic Center concert crowd got to experience that for the first time as the band gave the song its live debut during their tour kickoff set.

As can be seen in the fan-shot video above, Draiman opens the track in a soft but strong vocal, flanked by Dan Donegan and John Moyer playing acoustic guitars. But as the song builds in intensity, eventually the lights reveal a pair of violin players and Mike Wengren ready to pound away on the timpany drums.

Speaking with us recently about “Sound of Silence” (as seen in the video below), Draiman explained that the band decided to forgo their usual heavier route in order to record the song. “I thank you guys for pushing me in this direction,” Draiman told his bandmates as they recorded the song. “I wouldn’t have normally gone there. Personally, I hadn’t heard my voice like that since I was a young man, since I was a teenager.”

In addition to “Sound of Silence,” the band’s opening night set list in Fargo included Immortalized songs “The Vengeful One” and “The Light,” as well as a medley of cover songs that included Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer,” U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m looking For,” The Who’s “Baba O’Riley” and Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name.”

Disturbed played one show last year in their hometown of Chicago after announcing their return, but allowed fans to truly embrace their Immortalized album before hitting the road for extended touring this year. Now that the tour has begun, you can look for Disturbed playing in North America and Europe, with dates booked into August. See their upcoming dates here.
