Chad Tyson of the 98.7 The Gater radio station in West Palm Beach, Florida recently conducted an interview with VIXEN bassist Share Pederson, who now goes by the name Share Ross (after marrying Bam of DOGS D’AMOUR). You can now listen to the chat below.
Asked whether there is any new music on the way from VIXEN, Share said: “We’ve been working on stuff, which is challenging, ‘cause we all live really far apart from each other. But we are getting stuff recorded and getting it done, so hopefully this year we’ll finish that up.”
She continued: “We started off trying to [work on new music separately], and we just got really frustrated , so we all just fly to where the drummer lives, in Detroit, [which is] way better. The only problem is, ‘cause I live here in Florida… ‘Go into Detroit in the winter.’ And I’m, like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ But, you know, these are the sacrifices we have to make for rock and roll.”
Share also talked about her work as a life coach, specializing in confidence-building. She said: “It happened super organically. It was one of those things where… You know, I’m a rock and roll musician. I’ve done a million things to support myself and whatever… keep the rent paid, keep the mortgage, keep the roof over my head, etc. etc. So, at one point, I got really into video stuff, and my husband and I were doing a lot of video production, and I ended up being on camera. And then that led to me coaching entrepreneurs how to be comfortable on camera, which then came to the realization of, ‘You know what? You don’t actually need to know how to be on camera. You need to get your mind right.’ And that led to me coaching them. And then, eventually, I was realizing, like, okay, you know what? All of my creative friends need a lot of help with this, because they have what I call a ‘kicked-dog mentality,’ which is very, very prevalent in L.A., but it also is just rampant in anybody… You’ve got this creative calling and you think, ‘Well, that will never happen for me, and if I do it, nobody will ever pay me. And I’ve been screwed over and disappointed, and I’ve got all these regrets, and now I’m just, like, why bother?’ Kicked-dog mentality — like, why try again? Why put my heart out there and be all vulnerable with it? And the thing is, you know what? If you don’t, then you lose. It’s just really that simple.”
Regarding how she helps her clients pursue their dreams with confidence and brilliance, Share said: “The way I describe it is sort of like you’re laying this foundation. The foundation’s gonna be your mindset and your heart and getting all that stuff right. And by pouring a solid foundation, then you build the house, and the house is gonna be the actions that you take. And the other way is if you take all this action, but in your mind, you’re thinking, ‘Well, it’s not gonna work,’ and, ‘I’m screwed,’ and, ‘I’m just gonna end up broken anyway,’ then it’s like building your house on sand, and it just doesn’t work. And I learned that the hard way.”
VIXEN’s forthcoming album is expected to include at least one song dedicated to the band’s guitarist and founder Jan Kuehnemund, who passed away in October 2013 after a battle with cancer.
The band was committed to reunite in 2012 but Kuehnemund’s cancer diagnosis caused what was thought of at the time as a delay. Sadly, however, after a fierce battle, Kuehnemund succumbed to her illness, thus the reunion was not meant to be.
After discussing the idea with friends and family as well as lead vocalist from VIXEN’s most recent lineup, Jenna Sanz-Agero, it was agreed that it was the right decision for the three surviving definitive members to carry on as VIXEN.
Kuehnemund was only 51 years old at the time of her death.
