Motorhead legend Lemmy Kilmister was bestowed with the Bass Player Lifetime Achievement Award by Metallica‘s Robert Trujillo over the weekend. It took place at the 2015 Bass Player Live! event, where some of rock and metal’s most celebrated bassists payed further homage to Lemmy by jamming Motorhead classics for the crowd.
“I only played bass ’cause I was a rotten guitarist,” Lemmy said while accepting the award, showing it off for the crowd for a few seconds before returning backstage.
An all-star performance of “Ace of Spades” actually featured no guitars at all. Both Robert Trujillo and Armand Sabal-Lecco played bass with Avenged Sevenfold / ex-Bad Religion drummer Brooks Wackerman and Ugly Kid Joe vocalist Whit Crane. “Killed By Death” was also jammed at the gig by Whit Crane, Pantera / Kill Devil Hill legend Rex Brown, Kings X‘s Dug Pinnick, Attika 7 / ex-Biohazard‘s Evan Seinfeld, Attika 7’s Ira Black, Kill Devil Hill’s Mark Zavon and Vane’s Tommy Rickard. When recently asked by Full Metal Jackie about abstaining from alcohol, Lemmy responded, “I don’t know, I haven’t been absent yet. [Laughs] Liquor, bourbon and coke; I went back to vodka and orange juice. That did my numbers a bit of good, I’ve been a diabetic since 2000. I don’t drink quite as much as I used to because I don’t enjoy it as much. But still, all the old vices are still in place.”
