The Front Row Report recently conducted an interview with SEVENDUST singer Lajon Witherspoon. You can now listen to the chat below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET):
On the making of the new SEVENDUST album “Kill The Flaw”:
“We wanted to take time to really unplug and focus on, I guess, getting away from saturating America [laughs], and get to our families and really unplug. And I think ‘Kill The Flaw’ was the perfect example of us being able to be rested, open-minded and our creative juices were flowing where we were going as a band. And to get on stage and write the way we used to as kids — you know, just, ‘Hey, we don’t know what the heck’s going on. Let’s get on a stage.’ Maybe Morgan [Rose, drums] would start out with a drum lick, or Clint [Lowery, guitar] would start out with a guitar riff, or John [Connolly, guitar], and we would just go from there, man. And it was exciting; every day, we would go into the studio excited. So that album has a definite angst to it.”
On how much SEVENDUST’s 2014 acoustic album, “Time Travelers & Bonfires”, contributed to the heavy atmosphere and feeling of “Kill The Flaw”:
“That’s a good question. You think about us, as SEVENDUST, being the band that we’ve been for so many years… We’ve never really… We did that ‘Southside Double-Wide’ [in 2004] acoustically, and we only did eight shows, maybe, [more than a decade] ago. So with us going out on a whole tour acoustically, and we still tried to not bring the normal, ‘Oh, this is gonna be a boring… We’re gonna have to sit down and cross our legs and watch the show.’ We brought the heat — we had ‘em bouncing and doing that, but still yet, to us, that wasn’t… It was still SEVENDUST, and it was great to be able to go down that avenue and get under the microscope and do songs and show them how a lot of these songs actually come from the seed of an acoustic guitar. So it’s really cool, and I don’t think a lot of people can go out and do a tour like that and really do a whole hour-, two-hour set and get away with it. So, for us, it only made us itch and want to do an electric album again, if that makes sense, because that’s what’s in us. You know, it killed me to sit down on that damn bench, so a lot of times, I’d be standing up. So, even though it was fun and I love it, and I can’t wait to do that acoustic thing again, but, you know, where we really… I guess where we really pop the most is when we’re up there with that electricity from those amps and stuff, what we started from, is what keeps us going, man.”
“Kill The Flaw” was released on October 2 via 7Bros. Records with ADA/Warner Brothers distribution. The CD was produced by SEVENDUST and recorded at Architekt Music in Butler, New Jersey with engineer/mixer Mike Ferretti.
