Oceans Of Slumber – Winter (maart 2016)

Oceans Of Slumber – Winter

Century Media

English:
Judging by the weather, despite the fact that the meteorological spring has begun, this album comes perfectly timed in terms of the title. Since Oceans Of Slumber come from Houston Texas, you would not expect them to know what a real winter is about. The temperature drops in the coldest month, January, averaging to a minimum of 6 degrees above zero and we that’s not what we call a harsh winter here in the Netherlands.

Nevertheless, the album title is certainly well chosen. The atmosphere around this album compares pretty well with our cold winters, including the gray Sunday afternoon by the fireplace while enjoying a delicious winter beer.

As the album opens with the title track Winter, you have no idea what to expect, as the song begins with progressive jazzy drums and acoustic guitars. The vocals of singer Cammie Gilbert comes as a soul diva and will put you on the wrong track completely. After two and a half minutes the amplifiers are sufficiently preheated and turn the whole thing into a kind of doom à la Ghost Brigade. Then one of the guitarists gets involved with the vocals and we are on the right track. The voice of Cammie becomes doomy as well and it seems that winter has finally been introduced.

In the following Devout the band clearly shows us that we are dealing with a progressive savvy band, who do not dodge extremities. The band emerged from the grindcore band Insect Warfare and that becomes clearly audible to their extreme drumming. Halfway through the song the band takes the pace almost on hold to insert a jazzy interlude, after which the song is soloing towards the end. Thus, a lot of variety.

Their own interpretation of The Moody Blues classic hitsong Nights In White Satin gets me to take a deep bow. The vocals Cammie are very strong and I never could have imagined to hear blast beats on this song, but Oceans Of Slumber just does it. But with full respect to the original song.

As the title suggests, Lullaby is a quiet ballad, followed by the acoustic and instrumental Laid To Rest. Fortunately, the pedal goes deeper down again on Suffer The Last Bridge. The song Goodlife shows us more of the experimental prog side of the band and hasn’t much to do with metal. Despite the positive title, there is a lot of darkness in the track Sunlight and Turpentine turns out to be a quite fragile song. On the other hand, we can even hear some sludgemetal getting into the song Apologue. So, this album offers a lot of variety.

To sum up, Winter has become a magnificent piece of work. The band members know how to work their instruments and are able to combine various styles like fusion, sludge, black, groove, doom and even classical piano to a great album. Progressive music at its best, although I am well aware that you should give the album some extra spins and time. Fortunately for us, the Winter is still out there and Oceans Of Slumber have delivered us a brilliant soundtrack.
