De band Athanasia laat op zijn debuutalbum The Order Of The Silver Compass een interessante mix horen van diverse stijlen. Klassieke heavy metal wordt gecombineerd met groove metal en black metal invloeden. Dat belooft dus een afwisselend album te worden.
Om bij het begin te beginnen, opent Read Between The Lines akoestisch, maar gaat na het spoken word intro al gauw over in stampende drums en groovende gitaren. De zang doet mij herinneren aan een band als Megadeth (uit het begin van deze eeuw). Een beetje zeurderig dus, maar wel met herkenbare melodielijnen. Ter ondersteuning horen we wat grotesque grunts op de achtergrond. Ook de volgende track Spoils Of War kent deze vibe en biedt nog weinig variatie ten opzichte van de albumopener. Niks nieuws en het nummer zeurt wat naar het einde.
Net als je denkt dat je het wel een beetje hebt gehad, komt de titeltrack The Order Of The Silver Compass om de hoek. Hier komt de band met veel meer black metal invloeden, terwijl de basis ligt op een bay-area sound. De zang is zelfs meer black, terwijl het melancholische cleane refrein wordt gezongen op een manier die we kennen van een band als Mercenary of Scar Symmetry.
Ook in Cyclops Lord komen deze ingrediënten duidelijk naar voren, zonder dat het een kopie is van het vorige nummer. Ze kunnen het dus wel.
Meteen is de honger aangewakkerd en zijn we benieuwd hoe het verderde verloop van het album zal zijn. Na een duister intro stampt The Bohemian uit de speakers. Wederom heeft de zang een kleine transformatie doorgemaakt en zingt hij meer met een traditionele heavy metal stem, met een rauw randje en af en toe uitstappend naar black growls. Muzikaal is dit een meer slepend nummer, met de nodige grooverolls.
Op Mechanized Assault gaat het gas, na wederom een lang intro, er weer goed op. Blackend groove metal voert de boventoon, want zo mag je de band wel omschrijven in dit nummer. Door de toevoeging van wat sympfonische keyboards, toont dit nummer ook wat invloeden van bands als Behemoth, Samael, Rotting Christ of Dimmu Borgir. Iets wat ook in het daar opvolgende Nightmare Sound naar voren komt, terwijl hier weer de melancholische zang van de het begin van het album terugkeert.
Als afsluiter krijgen we White Horse. Een soort ballad-achtig nummer dat het album eigenlijk geen eer aan doet, maar op de klassiek heavy metal albums bijna een must is om te doen. Op dit album is het toch een niemendalletje…
De conclusie is wel dat Athanasia wat leuke ideeën heeft, maar een echt eigen smoel mist. De band houdt het midden tussen heavy metal en black metal, maar biedt voor fans van beide genres genoeg materiaal om samen een biertje op te drinken. Of deze fans de groovende basis ook trekken is echter de vraag, maar dat is een kwestie van persoonlijke smaak.

The band Athanasia shows on their debut album The Order Of The Silver Compass an interesting mix of different styles. Classical heavy metal is combined with groove metal and black metal influences. That promises to be a varied album.
To start at the beginning, Read Between The Lines opens acoustically, but after the spoken word intro it soon turns into pounding drums and grooving guitars. The vocals remind me of a band like Megadeth (from the beginning of this century). A little whiny so, but with recognizable melodies. In support we hear some grotesque grunts in the background. Also the next track Spoils Of War has this vibe and offers little variation compared to the album opener. Nothing new and the song is nagging towards the end.
Just like you think you’ve had it, the title track The Order Of The Silver Compass is kicking in, just in time. Here shows the band their black metal side, while the basis lies on a bay-area sound. The vocals are even more black, while the melancholy clean chorus is sung in a way we know from a band like Mercenary or Scar Symmetry.
Also in Cyclops Lord, these ingredients are present, without being a copy of the previous song. So they can.
Immediately the hunger has been fueled and we are curious to know how the album will progress. After a dark intro The Bohemian pounds out of the speakers. Again the vocals have gone through a small transformation as he sings more with a traditional heavy metal voice, with a raw edge and occasionally stepping out to black growls. Musically this is a more dragging song, with the necessary grooverolls.
On Mechanized Assault the throttle, after another long intro, is pushed. Blackend groove metal predominates, because that’s how you can describe the band in this song. Through the addition of some sympphonic keyboards, this song also shows some influences from bands like Behemoth, Samael, Rotting Christ or Dimmu Borgir. Something that also emerges in the ensuing Nightmare Sound, while the melancholic vocals from the beginning of the album return.
Finally, we get White Horse. A sort of ballad-like song that actually does not honor the album, but on classic heavy metal albums is almost a must do. On this album it is never a snag …
The conclusion is that Athanasia has some nice ideas, but lacks an identity. The band is in the midst of heavy metal and black metal, but offers fans of both genres enough material to drink a beer together. Whether these fans also dig the grooving basis is the question, but that is a matter of personal taste.
